Original job description

Come bake with us! 🐻🍞

Black Bear Bakery is a proud queer-owned bakery in St. Catharines, and we’re looking for a baker to rise with us. Our baking is inspired by nostalgic recipes and unique flavours, the kind that make you say “oh, I haven’t had one of these in years!” and “This sounds fun!”

We’re growing, and we need a dependable, skilled baker who wants to roll up their sleeves, bring their ideas, and help us make more of the good stuff. If you love bread, get excited about fermentation, and want a place where your creativity is welcome, you could be our person.

The details

Full-time, 30 to 40 hours
Start times vary between 4:00 AM and 9:00 AM (early birds, rejoice!)
Pay: $20 to $23 per hour, based on experience

What you’ll be up to

Mixing, shaping, proofing, and baking sourdough and other breads
Crafting, portioning, and baking cookies, quickbreads, and pastries
Helping care for our sourdough starter, Suzy Toot (yes, she has a name, and yes, she’s a star)
Prepping and packing product for our Thursday and Saturday market days
Handling cash and serving customers
Making drinks from our coffee menu
Occasionally staffing our Farmers’ Market stall and chatting with our regulars
Keeping our production space clean and following food safety standards
Keeping an eye on ingredient inventory and giving us a heads up when we’re running low
Opening and closing duties

You might be our baker if you

Are passionate about baking, especially sourdough, fermentation, and bread (but if you simply love baking in general, we’d still love to hear from you!)
Have 1 to 2 years of professional baking experience, ideally with bread or sourdough
Can work independently during early-morning shifts or cohesively with a team
Are reliable, punctual, and good at managing your time
Can lift up to 20 kg / 50 lbs and be on your feet for long stretches
Enjoy getting to know customers at the bakery and market
Have your Food Handler Certification (or are willing to get one)
Are available on Saturdays
Have ideas you’d love to try out. We want to see your creativity!

Ready to apply?

Send your resume and a short note about your baking experience to info@blackbearbakery.ca. Tell us what you’ve baked, what you’ve worked with, and what you’re PASSIONATE about. We want to hear it all! We thank all applicants, but only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
